JEE Main / Advanced · result day to first year
Life after JEE
Your JEE result is not the finish line, it is the start of counselling, and good choices here matter as much as your rank. This guide walks you through JoSAA, CSAB and state counselling, the documents you need, how to fill choices smartly, and what to do if things did not go as planned. Always confirm dates and rules on the official counselling website for your year.
Your timeline
- 1
Result day
JEE Main results usually come in February and April; JEE Advanced results usually in early June
- Download your scorecard and rank card from the official NTA / JEE Advanced site and keep PDF copies plus printouts.
- Note every rank you have: Common Rank List (CRL) and your category rank. Counselling uses the category rank for reserved seats.
- If you qualified JEE Advanced, you can apply for IITs as well as NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA. If you only have JEE Main, you can go for the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) and state counselling.
- Do not pay anyone who calls you promising a seat. Counselling is done only through official portals.
- 2
Get documents ready
Right after results, before counselling registration (usually May to June)
- Check that your name, date of birth and category are spelled the same on every document.
- Get a fresh category certificate (OBC-NCL, EWS) in the format and date range the counselling body asks for. Old certificates are a common reason for seat cancellation.
- Scan all documents clearly, in the size and format asked by the portal.
- Get a medical certificate in the prescribed format if the counselling body asks for one (JoSAA does).
- 3
Registration and choice filling
JoSAA usually starts in early June, soon after the JEE Advanced result
- Register on josaa.nic.in with your JEE Main application number.
- Research colleges and branches: seat matrix, previous years' opening and closing ranks (on the official JoSAA OR-CR page), location, fees.
- Fill as many genuine choices as you can, in the order you truly prefer them.
- Check the mock allocations. In 2026 JoSAA ran two mock allocations before the real rounds. Use them to adjust your list.
- Lock your choices before the deadline. If you forget, JoSAA locks your last saved list automatically.
- 4
Seat allotment rounds
Usually mid June to late July for JoSAA (5 rounds in 2026)
- After each round, log in and check your allotment.
- If you get a seat, complete online reporting inside that round's time window: accept the seat, choose Freeze, Float or Slide, upload documents, pay the seat acceptance fee and answer any query raised by the verifier.
- Missing any reporting step cancels your seat and takes you out of JoSAA for that year.
- Keep watching your email, SMS and the portal for document queries.
- 5
Backup counselling
July to September
- Register for your home state counselling in parallel (MHT-CET CAP, WBJEE, UPTAC, REAP, KCET and others). Many have their own registration fee and deadline.
- If you have an NIT+ seat from JoSAA and want to try CSAB Special Rounds, pay the JoSAA Partial Admission Fee to keep that seat while you try.
- Do not leave a confirmed seat until you have a better seat confirmed in writing.
- 6
Physical reporting and admission
Usually July to August
- Report to the allotted institute on the date given, with all original documents and photocopies.
- Pay the institute fee. The JoSAA seat acceptance fee is adjusted in your institute fees.
- Apply for hostel, scholarship (National Scholarship Portal, state schemes, institute fee waivers) and an education loan if needed.
- 7
First semester
Classes usually start between late July and September
- Attend orientation and the induction programme.
- Learn the attendance rule for your institute on day one. Low attendance can stop you from writing end-semester exams.
- Join one or two clubs, but keep your first semester grades strong. CGPA starts counting from semester one.
Counselling bodies
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority)Students who qualified JEE Main (for the NIT+ system) and JEE Advanced (for IITs). One common process for all.Details
Covers: In 2026, 138 institutes: 23 IITs, IISc Bengaluru, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs and 56 other government funded technical institutes (Other-GFTIs), as listed on josaa.nic.in.
Rounds: 5 rounds of seat allocation in 2026, plus 2 mock allocations before them. No spot round at IITs or IISc after round 5.
- Seat acceptance fee (2026): Rs 15,000 for SC, ST and all PwD categories, Rs 30,000 for all other candidates. It includes Rs 5,000 non-refundable processing charges.
- Freeze: accept the seat and stop. Float: accept the seat but stay open for a higher choice at any institute. Slide: accept the seat but stay open only for a higher choice in the same institute. You can change Float to Slide or Freeze, or Slide to Freeze, in any round except the last.
- If you do not finish online reporting in a round's window, the seat is cancelled and you are out of JoSAA for that year.
- Withdrawal is allowed only in specific windows (in 2026, IIT seats up to round 4 and NIT+ seats up to round 5). A valid withdrawal refunds the fee minus Rs 7,000 processing charges (2026).
- NIT+ seat holders had to pay an extra Partial Admission Fee after round 5 in 2026. Not paying it was treated as rejecting the seat.
- Admission also needs a Class 12 performance criterion (a minimum marks rule or being in the top 20 percentile of your board). Check the current Business Rules.
- Some programs have their own restrictions (for example colour vision or subject requirements). See the 'Restrictions at institute / program level' page.
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board)JEE Main candidates who want the seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs that are still vacant after JoSAA.Details
Covers: CSAB Special Rounds for the NIT+ system after JoSAA, plus separate schemes such as NEUT seat allocation and supernumerary seats, all listed on csab.nic.in.
Rounds: Special rounds are usually held in August after JoSAA ends. The number of rounds and fees are announced in that year's CSAB information brochure.
- CSAB has its own registration and fee. JoSAA registration does not carry over automatically.
- If you already hold a JoSAA NIT+ seat and want to try CSAB, pay the JoSAA Partial Admission Fee so you do not lose that seat.
- Seats can be cancelled if you do not meet the minimum eligibility in the brochure. In 2026 CSAB asked such candidates to upload improved marksheets through the portal.
- Read the brochure for refund rules before paying.

Choice filling, done right
Fill many choices, in honest order
The system always gives you the highest choice in your list that your rank can get. Adding a lower choice never hurts a higher one. So list every college and branch you would actually join, from most wanted to least wanted, and do not put something you would never join.
College vs branch
There is no single right answer. A top college with a branch you like moderately gives strong peers, brand and campus placement. A lower college with your dream branch can work if you really love the subject. If you are unsure what you like, college often matters more, since many institutes allow branch change, minors and electives. Check each institute's branch change rule before counting on it.
Use Float and Slide wisely
Choose Float if you would still prefer a higher choice at any institute. Choose Slide if you love this institute and only want a better branch inside it. Choose Freeze only when you are fully happy, because Freeze cannot be undone. Whatever you pick, you must still complete reporting and pay the fee each time.
Use real data, not rumours
Look at the previous years' opening and closing ranks on the official JoSAA OR-CR page, for your category, gender pool and quota (home state or other state for NITs). Closing ranks change every year, so treat them as a rough guide, not a promise.
Watch the mock allocations
JoSAA runs mock allocations before the real rounds. If the mock shows you getting a choice far down your list, add more safe options. If it shows a good choice, check your list order once more and lock it.
Keep safe choices at the bottom
End your list with options you are confident you can get, such as newer NITs, IIITs or GFTIs in branches with comfortable past closing ranks. Also register for your state counselling as a backup.
Check restrictions before you choose
Some programs need specific subjects in Class 12 or have medical requirements such as colour vision. Read the 'Restrictions at institutes / academic programs level' page on JoSAA so you are not cancelled after allotment.
If you don't get the seat you wanted
Take a drop year
Pros: a second attempt with full preparation, and many students improve a lot. Cons: one year gap, pressure, money spent on coaching, and no guarantee. Drop only if you know what went wrong (concepts, practice, exam temperament) and have a clear plan. Check your remaining JEE attempts and age limits in the official information bulletin first.
State government engineering colleges
Many state colleges are strong, affordable and have good local placements. Register for your state counselling (MHT-CET CAP, WBJEE, UPTAC, REAP, KCET and others) even if you hope for JoSAA, since some take JEE Main ranks.
CSAB Special Rounds
Vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats after JoSAA are offered through CSAB. Students with lower ranks sometimes get seats here, especially in newer institutes or less popular branches.
B.Sc, BCA or BS programs
A B.Sc in Physics, Maths, Computer Science or Statistics, or a BCA, is a solid path. You can later do MCA, M.Sc, M.Tech or research, and many software jobs hire from these streams. Some institutes run strong BS programs and entrance exams of their own (for example IISERs through IAT, and NISER through NEST). Check each one's official site.
Private universities, with caution
Some private universities are good, many are expensive and average. Before paying, check AICTE approval and UGC recognition, NAAC and NIRF status, real placement data (median, not just the highest package), total 4-year fees and the refund policy. Never pay a 'booking amount' to an agent.
Study abroad
Germany, Russia, Canada and others take Indian students for engineering. Costs, language needs and recognition vary widely. Use only official university websites and government portals, and be careful with consultants charging large fees.
Change your stream
If you realise engineering is not for you, that is fine. Design, architecture, economics, law, commerce, pure sciences and defence entries are all respected careers. Look at entrance exams like CUET, NDA, CLAT or design exams, and decide calmly.
Your first year
Grades from semester one count
Your CGPA follows you into internships, placements, branch change and higher studies. Many students relax after JEE and lose marks in the first year. Keep steady, attend classes and do assignments on time.
Learn the basics of coding early
Whatever your branch, basic programming helps. Start with one language, practise regularly and build small projects. Do not try to learn ten things at once.
Know your institute rules
Read the academic rulebook: attendance requirement, branch change rules, credit system, backlogs and re-exams. Knowing these early saves a lot of stress.
Ragging is a crime, report it
Ragging is banned by UGC and AICTE rules. Every institute has an anti-ragging committee. You can also contact the national anti-ragging helpline listed on antiragging.in.
Look after your mind and money
Homesickness, comparison and loneliness are common. Talk to friends, seniors, mentors or the campus counsellor. Keep a simple budget, and apply for scholarships on time.
Explore, then focus
Try clubs, sports, hackathons and technical teams in the first year to find what you enjoy. By the second year, start going deeper in one or two areas.
Where it can lead
Campus placements
Most students take a job through campus placement in the final year. Internships, projects, coding skill, communication and CGPA all matter. Look at median packages and the share of students placed, not only the highest package.
GATE, M.Tech and PSU jobs
GATE scores are used for M.Tech / ME admissions in IITs, NITs and other institutes, and many public sector companies (PSUs) hire engineers through GATE. Good for those who like core engineering and stable government jobs.
MS or PhD abroad
Many students go to the US, Germany, Canada and other countries for a Master's or PhD. Research projects, good grades, recommendation letters and tests like GRE (where needed) and TOEFL or IELTS help. PhD programs are often funded.
MBA through CAT and other exams
Engineers often do an MBA after a few years of work. CAT is the main exam for IIMs. Work experience usually helps in interviews and placements.
UPSC and government exams
Engineers can sit for UPSC Civil Services, Engineering Services (ESE), state PSC exams and others. These need long, focused preparation, so plan your timeline.
Startups and entrepreneurship
Most good institutes have incubators and E-cells. You can start small during college. Expect risk, and have a backup plan.
Research and academics
If you love a subject, research internships in summer, a Master's and then a PhD can lead to careers in research labs, R&D teams and teaching.
Software and product roles beyond your branch
Students from many branches move into software, data and product roles through self-learning, projects and internships. Your branch does not lock your career.
Red flags and scams
- Anyone promising a guaranteed IIT, NIT or government college seat for money. JoSAA, CSAB and state seats are given only by merit through official portals.
- 'Management quota' or 'direct admission' offers in government institutes. IITs, NITs and IIITs under JoSAA do not sell seats.
- Look-alike websites. Check the exact address (josaa.nic.in, csab.nic.in, official state portals). We found a look-alike REAP domain showing a gambling site.
- Requests for your login password, OTP or JEE application details over phone or WhatsApp.
- Paid 'choice filling' services that want your login to fill choices for you. You can do it yourself with free official data.
- Pressure to pay a big 'booking amount' to a private college before your counselling results are out.
- Fake predictors that claim to know exact closing ranks for the current year. Nobody knows them in advance.
- Fees paid in cash to agents, or to bank accounts that are not the institute's or counselling body's official account.
Questions parents and students ask
Do I need JEE Advanced for NITs?
No. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs (the NIT+ system) admit through JEE Main rank. JEE Advanced is needed only for IITs (and IISc's programs in JoSAA). Both are filled through the same JoSAA process.
What is the difference between IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs?
IITs admit through JEE Advanced. NITs are national institutes admitting through JEE Main, with a home state quota for part of the seats. IIITs focus mostly on IT and electronics, some are fully government run and others are in public private partnership with different fees. GFTIs are other technical institutes funded by central or state governments. All of them are in JoSAA.
How much is the JoSAA seat acceptance fee?
In 2026 it was Rs 15,000 for SC, ST and PwD candidates and Rs 30,000 for others, including Rs 5,000 non-refundable processing charges. It is adjusted in your institute fees. Check the current year's Business Rules for any change.
If I choose Float, will I lose my current seat?
No. You keep your current seat unless you get a higher choice in a later round. If you move up, the earlier seat is released. You must complete reporting each time as asked.
Can I take part in JoSAA and my state counselling at the same time?
Yes, many students do. But read each body's rules on seat holding and fees, and do not withdraw from one seat until the other is confirmed.
What happens if I miss the reporting deadline?
In JoSAA, missing any online reporting step in a round cancels your seat and you cannot join later JoSAA rounds that year. Set alarms and check the portal daily during counselling.
Can I withdraw and get my money back?
JoSAA allows withdrawal only in fixed windows. In 2026 a valid withdrawal refunded the seat acceptance fee minus Rs 7,000 processing charges. After the window closes, institute refund rules apply.
My rank is low. Is my career over?
Not at all. Many successful engineers studied at state colleges or did B.Sc or BCA. What you learn, the projects you build and your consistency in college matter a lot. Explore CSAB, state counselling and other routes listed above.
Please note
- Fees, rounds and withdrawal rules here are from JoSAA 2026 documents. They can change every year, so check the current Business Rules and FAQ on josaa.nic.in.
- State counselling pages gave limited detail when we checked. Read each state's information brochure for exact eligibility, rounds and fees.
- The UPTAC site showed 2025 items when we checked, and the KEA page we could open showed older notices, so details for those two are general.
- We do not list cutoffs or closing ranks. Use the official JoSAA opening and closing rank page and treat past ranks only as a guide.
- This is a free guide, not official advice. When in doubt, contact the official helpdesk of the counselling body.
