NEET-UG · result day to first year

Life after NEET

Your NEET-UG score is a ticket into counselling, not a seat. The real game is registering in the right counselling bodies, filling choices smartly and reporting on time, round after round. This guide walks you and your parents from result day to your first year, with honest options if things do not go to plan.

Your timeline

  1. 1

    Result day

Usually June to July (in 2026 the re-NEET was held on 21 June and results were announced for around 20 July)

    • Download your scorecard from the official NTA NEET site and save several copies (PDF and printout).
    • Note your All India Rank (AIR) and your category rank. Counselling uses rank, not just marks.
    • Check your category, domicile and quota certificates are valid and in your name (OBC-NCL, EWS, SC/ST, PwBD, domicile).
    • Do not pay anyone who calls you after the result promising a seat. Official bodies do not call you individually.
  2. 2

    Research and shortlisting

1 to 3 weeks after result

    • Look at previous year official allotment lists on mcc.nic.in and your state counselling site to see which colleges closed near your rank.
    • Decide which counselling you will join: MCC (AIQ, deemed, central, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC), your home state, and AACCC if you are open to AYUSH.
    • Make a fee and bond sheet for every college you might list. Fees and bonds are set by colleges and states, and MCC says it takes no responsibility for this information.
    • Talk as a family about budget limits before choice filling opens.
  3. 3

    Registration and choice filling

Round 1 typically opens soon after results (late July to August)

    • Register yourself on the official portal. MCC says to fill the form on your own, not through an agent; more than one registration leads to debarment.
    • Pay the registration fee and refundable security deposit online.
    • Fill choices in your true order of preference. MCC has no limit on number of choices.
    • Lock your choices before the deadline. Unlocked choices are auto-locked, and locked choices cannot be unlocked even by MCC.
  4. 4

    Allotment and reporting

Each round has a result date and a reporting window of about a week

    • Download the allotment letter as soon as results are out.
    • Choose Freeze (happy with seat, report physically) or Float (want upgrade, submit willingness online and upload documents for online verification) as MCC allows.
    • Report with original documents within the window. Missing the window can cost you the seat and the deposit.
    • Pay college fees only at the college or through its official channel, and get a receipt.
  5. 5

    Later rounds and stray round

In MCC 2026: Round 2 in September, Round 3 late September to early October, stray vacancy round in October

    • Upgrades are possible up to Round 3 in MCC counselling.
    • Read exit rules before each round: Round 1 has free exit, leaving a Round 2 seat forfeits the deposit, and Round 3 seats cannot be resigned.
    • Keep following your state counselling in parallel. To join a state seat you must surrender your AIQ seat.
    • Join a stray round only if you will definitely take what you get. A stray seat must be joined or the deposit is forfeited.
  6. 6

    Joining college

After your final round, usually September to November

    • Complete college admission formalities, medical fitness, hostel allotment and anti-ragging undertaking.
    • Sign any bond or undertaking only after reading it fully. Ask for a copy.
    • Open a bank account near campus if needed and keep fee receipts safe.
    • Get your original certificates back or a written receipt if the college keeps any of them.
  7. 7

    First year begins

Classes start after admissions close, as per NMC calendar

    • Attend the foundation course seriously. It covers basics and professional skills.
    • Start anatomy, physiology and biochemistry with a steady daily routine.
    • Find seniors and faculty mentors through official channels.
    • Look after sleep, food and mental health. A big transition is normal.

Choice filling, done right

Order choices by real preference, not by guesswork

Allotment always gives you the highest choice you qualify for. So put dream colleges first and safe colleges after them. Never leave a college you would hate in the list, because if it gets allotted you may lose your deposit by refusing.

Government vs private fee gap is huge

Government college fees are usually a small fraction of private and deemed fees. Look up the official fee for every college before listing it. Many families list private colleges in a hurry and then cannot pay the multi-year fee.

Deemed university risk

Deemed seats need a much higher deposit (Rs 2,00,000 in MCC 2026) and full course fees are high. If you leave a deemed seat after Round 2, that deposit is forfeited. Only list deemed colleges you can afford for the full course, including hostel.

Read bond and service rules

Many state government seats come with a compulsory service or bond after MBBS, and some quotas have discontinuation penalties. MCC says it takes no responsibility for fee or bond information, so check the college and state brochure yourself.

Use Round 1 free exit wisely

In MCC, Round 1 allows free exit. Round 2 exit forfeits the deposit and Round 3 seats cannot be resigned. Plan your risk-taking early, when exit is free.

Freeze or Float

Freeze if you are happy and want to stop. Float if you want an upgrade but will keep the current seat if no better one comes. When you get upgraded, the earlier seat is released automatically, so you cannot go back.

Lock before the deadline

Choices are auto-locked at the deadline, and locked choices cannot be changed even by MCC. Take a printout or PDF of your locked choice list.

If you don't get the seat you wanted

Drop year and reattempt NEET

Pros: many students improve with a focused year, and an MBBS seat in a government college is worth a lot. Cons: there is no guarantee, the year costs money and mental energy, and pressure can be heavy. Be honest about your score gap, study habits and family support before deciding. Consider joining a degree in parallel as a backup if your plan allows it.

BDS

BDS is filled through the same MCC and state counselling. It is a 5 year professional degree with clinical practice, MDS, government and academic careers. Choose it because you want dentistry, not only as a second prize.

AYUSH (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS)

Counselling through AACCC for central and AIQ seats and through states for state seats. These are recognised professional degrees with their own regulators, practice rights and PG options. Visit a college and talk to practitioners before choosing.

B.Sc. Nursing

Strong demand in India and abroad, and government jobs in hospitals and services. Some central institute seats are filled via MCC using NEET; many states and colleges have their own process. Check the institute's rules on age and gender ratio.

Allied and healthcare professions

Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical lab technology, radiology and imaging, optometry, anaesthesia technology, audiology, dietetics and similar courses. Some states admit through NEET scores, others through separate tests or merit. Check the college is approved by the relevant state or national body.

B.Sc. / B.Tech research paths

Biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, life sciences and pharmacy can lead to research, industry, pharma, clinical research and public health careers. Exams like CUET-UG open central university options.

MBBS abroad (with caution)

Under NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, the course must be at least 54 months, taught in English, with a 12 month internship at the same foreign institution, and you must be eligible for a licence in that country. You then need a further 12 month supervised internship in India and must pass the screening or exit test NMC requires. The whole course must be finished within 10 years. Many students fail to meet these rules, so verify the university and course against the regulations before paying anyone.

Your first year

Make anatomy a daily habit

Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are huge. Small daily revision beats last minute cramming. Dissection hall time is precious, so attend it.

Attendance matters

Medical colleges follow minimum attendance rules for exam eligibility. Missing classes early can block you from university exams later.

Use standard books and your college notes

Ask seniors which standard textbooks your faculty prefer. Too many resources at once leads to confusion.

Ragging is illegal: report it

Every college must have an anti-ragging committee and you sign an anti-ragging undertaking. If anything happens, report it to the college committee or the national anti-ragging helpline.

Protect your mental health

Homesickness, comparison and the volume of study hit many first years. Sleep, eat well, stay in touch with family and use the college counsellor or mentor system early.

Money and safety basics

Pay fees only through official college channels and keep receipts. Do not hand original certificates to anyone outside the official process.

Where it can lead

NEET-PG / NExT and specialisation

After MBBS and internship, PG seats (MD, MS, PG diplomas) are currently through NEET-PG. NMC has planned the National Exit Test (NExT) to replace it, but as of August 2026 reports say its rollout timeline is still unclear. Follow official NMC notices.

MD / MS and super-speciality

MD (medicine side) and MS (surgery side) take about 3 years, followed by DM or MCh super-speciality options for those who want deeper expertise.

Government service

Medical officer posts in state health services, central services, railways, ESIC, defence medical services and others. Many state bonds are served in these posts after MBBS.

Practising abroad (USMLE, PLAB, others)

USMLE for the USA and the UK licensing route (earlier PLAB, now moving to the UKMLA for international graduates) are popular. They need serious planning, costs and visa work. Check the official licensing body of that country.

Research and academics

Clinical research, MD-PhD style paths, teaching in medical colleges and work with research councils. Start small projects during MBBS to build a profile.

Public health

MPH, community medicine, epidemiology and roles with government programmes and global health organisations.

Hospital and healthcare management

MBA or MHA in hospital administration, health tech, insurance and pharma roles for doctors who like systems and management.

Entrepreneurship and health tech

Telemedicine, medical content, diagnostics and health startups. Clinical knowledge plus tech skills is a strong mix.

Red flags and scams

  • Anyone promising a 'confirmed' government or AIQ seat for money. Seats come only through official online counselling.
  • 'Management quota' or 'NRI quota' seat sold for cash outside official counselling. NRI seats need proper NRI documents and are allotted through MCC or state counselling.
  • Agents asking for your login ID, password or OTP. MCC says register yourself, not through any agent.
  • Fake notices on WhatsApp or social media. MCC has issued an advisory about a fake notice; check only mcc.nic.in and your state's official site.
  • Calls claiming to be from MCC. MCC says it will not contact candidates individually.
  • Requests to pay fees into a personal bank account or UPI ID.
  • MBBS abroad agents who will not show how the course meets NMC's FMGL 2021 rules (54 months, English medium, internship at the same university, licence in that country).
  • Fake category, domicile or disability certificates. MCC cancels admission and can take legal action.

Questions parents and students ask

Can I register in MCC and my state counselling at the same time?

Yes. MCC allows participation in state counselling during Rounds 1 and 2. If you want the state seat, you must surrender the AIQ seat. Central and state data are shared, so you cannot keep two seats.

Will I lose my security deposit if I leave a seat?

In MCC 2026, Round 1 has free exit. Leaving a Round 2 seat, not joining after Round 2 or later, or having admission cancelled for wrong information forfeits the deposit. Round 3 seats cannot be resigned.

What is the difference between Freeze and Float?

Freeze means you accept the seat and stop upgrading, and you report physically. Float means you keep the seat but want to be considered for higher choices in the next round.

Is the stray vacancy round open to everyone?

No. If you have joined a seat, hold a seat, or did not report after a Round 3 allotment, you are not eligible. If you get a stray seat you must join it, or lose the deposit and be barred from further rounds.

How do I get an AFMC seat?

Register for AFMC on the MCC portal. MCC sends the list to AFMC, which runs its own screening and merit list. Check AFMC's medical standards and service obligation in its information brochure.

Has NExT replaced NEET-PG?

Not yet. As of August 2026, reports on NMC's draft rules say the NExT timeline remains unclear and FMGE continues for foreign graduates until NExT takes effect. Follow nmc.org.in for official updates.

Do I need to pay an agent to fill choices?

No. Registration and choice filling are simple online steps you can do yourself. MCC explicitly says not to use agents.

What if my rank is not enough for MBBS?

Look at BDS, AYUSH, B.Sc. Nursing, allied health and science degrees, or plan a drop year with a clear strategy. If you consider MBBS abroad, check every NMC FMGL 2021 condition first.

Please note

  • Fee and deposit figures are from the MCC UG Counselling 2026 Information Bulletin (revised 20.08.2026). They can change every year; always check the current bulletin.
  • MCC rules change between years (for example, 2025 news reports described free exit extending into Round 2 in some cases, while the 2026 bulletin limits free exit to Round 1). Read the bulletin for your year.
  • State rules (domicile, bonds, discontinuation fees, rounds) differ widely. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka are only examples; we could not open the full official state brochures and did not copy any state fee or bond figures.
  • AACCC deposit amounts and AFMC service obligation terms were not visible on the pages we opened; check their official bulletins and brochures.
  • NExT status is based on news reports of NMC draft rules (August 2026), not a final NMC notification.
  • No cutoffs or ranks are given because they change every year; use official allotment lists on MCC and state sites.
  • This guide is general information, not legal or admission advice. The official bulletin always wins.
