GATE CS: Computer Science & Information Technology Paper
GATE CS blueprint, topic priority matrix, quick-revision sheets and a real 2026 PYQ practice arena for the paper that decides M.Tech seats and PSU calls.
- Organising institute
- IIT Madras for GATE 2027 (IIT Guwahati ran GATE 2026); the organising IIT changes every year
- Questions
- 65: General Aptitude 10 (5 × 1 mark + 5 × 2 marks) + CS & IT 55 (25 × 1 mark + 30 × 2 marks)
- Total marks
- 100: General Aptitude 15 + Engineering Mathematics 13 + core CS 72
- Question types
- MCQ (one correct of 4), MSQ (one or more correct of 4) and NAT (type a number on a virtual keypad)
- Duration and mode
- 3 hours, computer-based test with an on-screen virtual scientific calculator only
- GATE 2027 dates
- 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 Feb 2027; sessions 9:30 AM-12:30 PM and 2:30-5:30 PM (subject to change)
- Eligibility
- 3rd year or higher of a UG degree (or completed); no age limit
Shown here is a 1-mark MCQ: +1 for correct, −1/3 for wrong. A 2-mark MCQ gives +2 for correct and −2/3 for wrong. MSQs and NATs (1 or 2 marks) have NO negative marking, but also no partial credit: an MSQ scores only if you pick exactly all the correct options, and a NAT scores only if your number is within the answer allowed. NAT answers can be negative or decimal; the question says how many decimal places to enter, and the brochure advises rounding only at the end. An unattempted question always scores 0.
How to Crack: Strategic Blueprint
Pick where you are. Each plan is built around past papers, a formula diary and honest mock analysis.
Use semester courses as GATE preparation instead of running two separate tracks.
- 1Map your semester subjects to the 10 GATE CS sections and study each one to GATE depth while it is being taught.
- 2Close every subject with its GATE PYQs from the last 10-15 years; GATE repeats concepts far more than exact questions.
- 3Start your formula and concept notebook now; Discrete Maths, DS and Algorithms notes will be used for two years.
- 4Write small C programs for pointers, recursion and linked lists; GATE output questions punish students who only read theory.
- 5Do one 30-minute General Aptitude set every weekend; it is 15 easy-to-moderate marks most students under-practise.
Topper-grade short notes
One-page subject maps
For each of the 10 CS sections, fit the definitions, formulas and standard results (master theorem cases, normal-form rules, page-table formulas) on one page. These 10 pages are your last-week revision.
PYQ concept log
For every PYQ you get wrong or guess, write the concept in one line and the trick that solves it. GATE CS repeats ideas such as cache tag bits, pipeline stalls and closure properties year after year, so this log becomes a list of what the paper actually tests.
True/false option drills for MSQ
When revising theory topics like TOC, OS or CN, write 5 statements per topic and mark each true or false with a one-line reason. This is exactly the skill an MSQ needs, since there is no partial credit.
Dry-run sheets for code
For C programs, recursion and DS questions, trace by hand in a table (variable values per line, stack frames per call). Keep the trickiest traces; re-trace them every two weeks without looking.
Ideal self-study day
- 6:00 – 6:30Revise one subject map and the formula cards
- 6:30 – 8:30Deep work: new topic of the current heavy subject
- 8:30 – 9:00Breakfast and a short walk
- 9:00 – 16:00College or work (use free periods for 15-minute PYQ sets)
- 17:00 – 18:30PYQs for today's topic, timed, all three question types
- 18:30 – 19:00PYQ concept log: write down every mistake
- 19:30 – 21:00Second subject: theory plus 15 practice questions
- 21:00 – 21:30General Aptitude set (alternate days) or Engineering Maths drill
- 21:30 – 22:00Plan tomorrow, then lights out by 22:30
Topic Weightage & Do-or-Die Matrix
Estimates from the question mix of the two GATE 2026 CS papers (official IIT Guwahati question papers, topic tags on GATE Overflow) and Careers360's GATE 2026 weightage analysis; the organising institute does not publish weightage.
Where your marks come from (estimate)
Must-do topics carry roughly 61 of 100 marks. Get these topics to high accuracy and a GATE CS score good enough for an IIT/NIT M.Tech shortlist or PSU call is within reach, before you touch the low-priority list.
The GATE organising institute does not publish topic weightage; these are estimates from analyses of recent CS papers and change from set to set.
🔴 Must-Do · High weightage
- Vocabulary (Synonyms, Antonyms, Idioms)1 QBoth 2026 CS sets opened with a word-meaning question (antonym in Set 1, synonym in Set 2): an easy mark.
- Reading Comprehension and Inference1 QA short passage with 'what can be inferred' statements is a regular 2-mark question.
- Numerical Computation and Estimation2 QsRatios, percentages, profit and counting problems were 2 of the 5 one-mark GA questions in both 2026 CS sets.
- Probability and Elementary Statistics1-2 QsBoth 2026 CS sets had a dice probability 2-marker; Set 2 had another 1-mark probability question.
- Logic: Deduction and Induction2 Qs'If the statement is true, which is necessarily (not) true' questions appear every set; they test contrapositive vs converse.
🟡 Medium · Scoring
- Grammar and Sentence Correction0-1 QTenses, articles, prepositions and subject-verb agreement appear as quick 1-mark fill-in-the-blanks.
- Data Interpretation (Tables, Graphs, Charts)1 QUsually one 2-mark question built on a chart or table; slow but straightforward.
- Analogy0-1 QWord-pair analogies (Set 2, 2026) are quick if you name the relation first.
- Numerical Relations and Reasoning1 QArrangement, ranking and condition-based puzzles usually carry 2 marks.
- Spatial Aptitude (Transformations, Paper Folding, 2D/3D Patterns)1-2 QsFigure questions on rotation, mirroring, folding and patterns appear in every set; practise visually, they can't be crammed.
🟢 Low priority · Lengthy
- Narrative Sequencing0-1 QArranging sentences into a paragraph shows up only in some sets.
- Mensuration and Geometry0-1 QAreas, volumes and angle questions appear occasionally, often mixed with spatial figures.
General Aptitude Formula & Concept Sheets
Quick on-screen revision cards for the must-do topics. Copy them into your own revision notebook.
Percentages, Profit and Ratios
- Percent change% change = (new − old) / old × 100
- Successive changesa% then b% → net = a + b + ab/100 %
- ProfitProfit = SP − CP; Profit % = Profit / CP × 100
- Shares boughtUnits = money invested / price per unit; value later = units × new price
- Ratio splitSplit N in a : b → Na/(a+b) and Nb/(a+b)
💡 Convert money into number of units first (shares, kg, items); most GATE profit questions are just units × price.
Counting (Permutations and Combinations)
- ArrangementsnPr = n! / (n − r)!
- SelectionsnCr = n! / (r!(n − r)!)
- Circular arrangements(n − 1)! for n distinct objects in a circle
- Knock-out tournamentGames = players − 1 (every game eliminates exactly one player)
- SubsetsA set of n items has 2ⁿ subsets
💡 Look for an invariant (one elimination per game, one handshake per pair) before listing cases.
Probability
- BasicP(E) = favourable / total equally likely outcomes
- ComplementP(not E) = 1 − P(E)
- Independent eventsP(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)
- Exactly k successesP = nCk pᵏ (1 − p)ⁿ⁻ᵏ
- Two dice36 ordered outcomes; sum 7 has 6 ways, sum 2 or 12 has 1 way
💡 For two dice, list pairs by the first roll; it is faster and safer than guessing a formula.
Logic: What Follows from 'If P then Q'
- GivenP → Q (When it rains, peacocks dance)
- Contrapositive (always true)not Q → not P
- Converse (not necessarily true)Q → P
- Inverse (not necessarily true)not P → not Q
- 'Only when''P only when Q' means P → Q
💡 Translate every option into one of these four forms before choosing; the converse is the usual trap.
Reading Inference Questions
- Absolute words'always', 'never', 'all', 'only' are false unless the passage says so
- Hedged words'sometimes', 'some', 'often', 'may' match passages that use similar hedges
- ScopeInfer only from the passage, not from your own knowledge
- Necessarily trueMust hold in every case the passage allows
💡 If the passage says 'sometimes' and a statement says 'always', that statement is false.
Vocabulary and Analogy
- Antonym pairsprotagonist ↔ antagonist, expedite ↔ retard, augment ↔ diminish
- Synonym setsexpedite, hasten, hurry, accelerate
- Analogy methodState the relation of the first pair in a sentence, then test each option in the same sentence
- Common relationsthing : need it satisfies (water : thirst), worker : tool, part : whole
💡 Build a sentence like 'Water quenches thirst'; only one option fits the same sentence.
Spatial Aptitude Checks
- RotationClockwise 90° four times returns the shape; track one corner mark
- Mirror imageLeft and right swap; top and bottom stay for a vertical mirror
- Paper foldingEach fold doubles the holes; unfold in reverse order, mirroring across each fold line
- Cube netsOpposite faces are never adjacent in a net; in a straight row of 3, faces 1 and 3 are opposite
💡 Track one small asymmetric feature (a dot or corner) instead of the whole figure.

Exam Day Hacks & Reasoning
Negative-marking maths, by question type
For MCQs a wrong answer costs one-third of the question's marks. A blind guess among 4 options averages exactly 0 (1-mark: 0.25×1 − 0.75×1/3 = 0; 2-mark: 0.25×2 − 0.75×2/3 = 0), so it gains nothing and adds risk. A 50-50 guess averages +0.33 on a 1-mark MCQ and +0.67 on a 2-mark MCQ, so guess only after eliminating two options. MSQs and NATs have no negative marking, so never leave one blank: any honest attempt can only help.
MSQ: judge each option alone
There is no partial credit: you must select every correct option and no wrong one. Treat each option as a separate true/false question with a reason. Remember an MSQ can have just one correct option, so don't force a second tick.
NAT: follow the decimal places asked
Answers are typed on a virtual keypad and can be negative or decimal. The question states how many decimal places to enter, and the brochure advises rounding only at the very end, not at intermediate steps. Use the on-screen virtual calculator; your own calculator is not allowed.
Time split for 180 minutes
A workable plan: General Aptitude first in about 20 minutes, the 25 one-mark CS questions in about 40 minutes, the 30 two-mark questions in about 100 minutes, and 20 minutes to revisit marked ones. If a 2-mark question is still unclear after 4 minutes, mark it and move on.
Bank General Aptitude
GA is 15 marks of mostly short questions and is common to every paper. Students who score 12+ here buy themselves room for one bad technical section. Don't rush it to 'save time' for CS; most GA errors are careless reading.
