NDA & NA Examination (Written Test)
Maths and GAT blueprint, topic priority matrix, quick-revision sheets and a PYQ practice arena for the written test that opens the door to SSB.
- Papers
- Mathematics (code 01) + General Ability Test (code 02), same day
- Questions
- Maths 120, GAT 150 (English 50 + GK 100)
- Written marks
- 900 (Maths 300 + GAT 600: English 200, GK 400)
- Duration
- 2½ hours per paper
- Mode
- Pen and paper, objective MCQs on an OMR sheet
- After the written test
- SSB Intelligence and Personality Test, 900 marks (final merit out of 1800)
- Sessions
- 2 per year (NDA I around April, NDA II around September)
This is the GAT scheme (150 Qs × 4 marks). Mathematics carries 2.5 marks per question with −0.83 per wrong answer. In both papers one-third of the question's marks is deducted for each wrong answer, a question with more than one answer marked is treated as wrong, and a blank question costs nothing.
How to Crack: Strategic Blueprint
Pick where you are. Each plan is built around past papers, a formula diary and honest mock analysis.
Build Maths early: NDA Maths is the paper most candidates lose the written test on.
- 1Do NCERT Class 11 Maths chapter by chapter, then that chapter's NDA PYQs before moving on.
- 2Read one English newspaper editorial daily and log 5 new words with a sentence each.
- 3Cover NCERT Class 9-10 Science and Social Science once; GAT GK leans heavily on this level.
- 4Start a running fitness routine now (running, push-ups, sit-ups); SSB and training both need it.
- 5Take one sectional NDA Maths test every two weeks and log every mistake.
Topper-grade short notes
Formula and shortcut sheet
One sheet per Maths unit: identities, standard results and the shortcut that saves time (for example cot A·cot B·cot C = 1/(tan A + tan B + tan C) in a triangle). Read the trig and calculus sheets daily in the last month; NDA rewards speed.
GK one-pagers from NCERT
For each GAT subject, condense NCERT Class 6-10 (plus 11-12 for Physics, Chemistry, Polity) into one-page lists: laws and units, important dates, schedules and articles, rivers and winds. Revise one subject a day on rotation.
Vocabulary and error log
Keep a small notebook of words, idioms and grammar errors you met in mocks, each with one example sentence. English is 200 marks; repeated revision of your own errors pays more than new word lists.
OMR mock review
After every mock, mark each question as right, careless, unknown or guessed. Track your accuracy on guesses: if guessed answers are mostly wrong, guess less, because every wrong answer costs one-third of the question's marks.

Topic Weightage & Do-or-Die Matrix
Estimates from topic-wise analyses of NDA II 2025 Mathematics by Doon Defence Dreamers and Physics Wallah, cross-checked with Careers360's chapter-wise NDA Maths analysis; UPSC does not publish weightage.
Where your marks come from (estimate)
Must-do topics carry roughly 505 of 900 marks. Lock in these topics with high accuracy and a written-test score that gets you to SSB is within reach, before you touch the low-priority list.
UPSC does not publish topic weightage; these are estimates from analyses of recent papers and shift from paper to paper.

Trigonometry Core
- Pythagoreansin²θ + cos²θ = 1, 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ, 1 + cot²θ = cosec²θ
- Double anglesin 2θ = 2 sinθ cosθ, cos 2θ = cos²θ − sin²θ = 1 − 2sin²θ
- Triple anglesin 3θ = 3sinθ − 4sin³θ, cos 3θ = 4cos³θ − 3cosθ
- Compoundtan(A + B) = (tan A + tan B)/(1 − tan A tan B)
- In a triangleA + B + C = π ⇒ tan A + tan B + tan C = tan A·tan B·tan C
- Sine / cosine rulea/sin A = b/sin B = c/sin C = 2R, cos A = (b² + c² − a²)/2bc
💡 Learn sin and cos of 15°, 18°, 36° and 75°: NDA uses them every paper.
Trigonometric Equations and Inverse Trig
- sin x = sin α ⇒ x = nπ + (−1)ⁿα
- cos x = cos α ⇒ x = 2nπ ± α
- tan x = tan α ⇒ x = nπ + α
- Rangessin⁻¹x ∈ [−π/2, π/2], cos⁻¹x ∈ [0, π], tan⁻¹x ∈ (−π/2, π/2)
- sin⁻¹x + cos⁻¹x = π/2, tan⁻¹x + cot⁻¹x = π/2
💡 For 'number of solutions in an interval' questions, list solutions period by period and check the end of the interval carefully.
Sequences, Quadratics, Logs
- APTₙ = a + (n − 1)d, Sₙ = n/2 [2a + (n − 1)d], Tₙ = Sₙ − Sₙ₋₁
- GPTₙ = arⁿ⁻¹, Sₙ = a(rⁿ − 1)/(r − 1), S∞ = a/(1 − r) for |r| < 1
- SumsΣn = n(n + 1)/2, Σn² = n(n + 1)(2n + 1)/6, Σn³ = [n(n + 1)/2]²
- Quadraticax² + bx + c = 0: α + β = −b/a, αβ = c/a, D = b² − 4ac
- Logslog(mn) = log m + log n, logₐb = log b / log a, logₐa = 1
💡 a, b, c in HP means 1/a, 1/b, 1/c are in AP: convert and use AP results.
Matrices and Determinants
- A⁻¹ = adj A / |A|, exists only if |A| ≠ 0
- |AB| = |A||B|, |kA| = kⁿ|A| for an n×n matrix
- |adj A| = |A|ⁿ⁻¹, (AB)⁻¹ = B⁻¹A⁻¹, (AB)ᵀ = BᵀAᵀ
- Skew-symmetricAᵀ = −A, diagonal entries 0; odd order ⇒ |A| = 0
- System AX = B|A| ≠ 0 ⇒ unique solution
💡 If AB = O and A is non-singular, multiply by A⁻¹: B must be O.
Coordinate Geometry
- Slopem = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁); parallel m₁ = m₂, perpendicular m₁m₂ = −1
- Distance from line|ax₁ + by₁ + c| / √(a² + b²)
- Circlex² + y² + 2gx + 2fy + c = 0: centre (−g, −f), r = √(g² + f² − c)
- Parabola y² = 4axfocus (a, 0), directrix x = −a, latus rectum 4a
- Ellipse x²/a² + y²/b² = 1 (a > b)e = √(1 − b²/a²), latus rectum 2b²/a
- Parallelogramdiagonals bisect each other: A + C = B + D (as coordinates)
💡 For 3D, direction cosines satisfy l² + m² + n² = 1; the angle between lines uses cos θ = l₁l₂ + m₁m₂ + n₁n₂.
Calculus Essentials
- Limitssin x / x → 1, (1 + x)^(1/x) → e, (aˣ − 1)/x → ln a as x → 0
- Derivativesd(xⁿ) = nxⁿ⁻¹, d(sin x) = cos x, d(ln x) = 1/x, d(eˣ) = eˣ
- Maxima / minimaf′(x) = 0 and f″(x) < 0 ⇒ local max; compare with endpoints on a closed interval
- King property∫₀ᵃ f(x) dx = ∫₀ᵃ f(a − x) dx
- Odd / even∫₋ₐᵃ f = 0 if f odd, = 2∫₀ᵃ f if f even
- Areaarea between y = f(x) and the x-axis = ∫ |f(x)| dx
💡 Order of a DE is the highest derivative; degree is that derivative's power only after clearing radicals and fractions.
Vectors
- a·b = |a||b| cos θ, |a × b| = |a||b| sin θ
- Projection of a on b = a·b / |b|
- Area of triangle = ½ |AB × AC|, of parallelogram = |a × b|
- Perpendicular ⇔ a·b = 0, parallel ⇔ a × b = 0
- Regular hexagon ABCDEFAD = 2BC, CF = 2BA, BE = 2AF (as vectors)
💡 Expressions like p sin θ + q cos θ have maximum √(p² + q²): use it for 'maximum of |a×b| + k|a·b|' questions.
Probability and Statistics
- P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A ∩ B)
- IndependentP(A ∩ B) = P(A)·P(B)
- BinomialP(X = r) = ⁿCᵣ pʳ qⁿ⁻ʳ, mean np, variance npq
- Varianceσ² = Σx²/n − (x̄)²; first n natural numbers: (n² − 1)/12
- EmpiricalMode ≈ 3 Median − 2 Mean
- Regressionr² = b_yx × b_xy, both regression coefficients have the same sign as r
💡 Adding a constant to all data changes the mean but not the variance; multiplying by k multiplies variance by k².

Exam Day Hacks & Reasoning
Negative marking maths for NDA
Each wrong answer costs one-third of the question's marks. A blind guess among 4 options averages exactly 0 in both papers (GAT: 0.25×4 − 0.75×1.33 = 0; Maths: 0.25×2.5 − 0.75×0.83 = 0), so it gains nothing and adds risk. A 50-50 guess averages +1.33 in GAT and +0.83 in Maths, and even eliminating one option gives about +0.44 in GAT. Guess only after you have struck out at least one option.
Maths: two rounds, two minutes
120 questions in 150 minutes is 75 seconds each. Round 1: do every question that takes under 2 minutes and skip the rest. Round 2: return to skipped ones. Trigonometry, matrices, probability and standard calculus results are usually quickest; leave long coordinate and 3D calculations for later.
GAT: English first, then GK
A workable split for 150 minutes: English 50 Qs in about 55 minutes, GK 100 Qs in about 75 minutes, 20 minutes for OMR checking and returning to doubtful ones. GK questions are mostly know-it-or-not, so answer quickly and don't re-think them.
OMR discipline
Mark more than one bubble and the question is treated as wrong even if one bubble is correct. Fill the booklet series and roll number carefully, and bubble answers in blocks of 10-20 rather than all at the end, so you never run out of time with an empty sheet. Use the pen type your admit card specifies.
Both papers count, and the sum decides
The written merit list uses your Maths + GAT total, and UPSC can also fix minimum qualifying marks for each paper. Don't write off Maths and hope GAT carries you: secure the easy Maths marks first.
