Per the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin: +4 for a correct answer, -1 for an incorrect option, 0 for unanswered. There is no optional section: all 180 questions are compulsory. If more than one option is found correct, +4 goes only to those who marked any of the correct options; if all options are correct, +4 goes to everyone who attempted it; if a question is wrong or dropped, all candidates who appeared get +4.
How to Crack: Strategic Blueprint
Pick where you are. Each plan is built around past papers, a formula diary and honest mock analysis.
Build the base: roughly half of Physics and Chemistry, and a large share of Botany and Zoology, comes from Class 11.
- 1Read NCERT line by line for Biology the same week you are taught a chapter; NEET Biology is mostly NCERT-based.
- 2For Physics and Chemistry, finish NCERT examples and exercises, then one NEET-level question bank per subject.
- 3Close every chapter with its NEET PYQs (at least 2016 onward) before moving on.
- 4Start a formula diary for Physics and a reactions/exceptions diary for Chemistry from day one.
- 5Take one mixed chapter test every Sunday and log each mistake in an error notebook.
Topper-grade short notes
NCERT margin notes for Biology
Do not rewrite NCERT. Underline it, and write extra lines from PYQs and mock mistakes in the margin. Your final revision is then one book, not three.
Formula and exceptions diary
One small notebook for Physics formulas (with conditions and units) and one for Chemistry exceptions, named reactions and trends. Read one for 15 minutes every morning.
Error notebook
For each wrong or guessed question note the question in short, why you got it wrong (concept, calculation, misread) and the correct idea in one line. Re-solve the list every two weeks.
1-7-30 spaced revision
Revise a new chapter after 1 day, 7 days and 30 days. NEET rewards breadth across 4 subjects, so short spaced revisions beat one long session.
Ideal self-study day
- 5:30 - 6:00Wake up, water, 10 minutes of light exercise
- 6:00 - 7:30NCERT Biology reading (Botany or Zoology, alternate days)
- 7:30 - 8:00Breakfast and break
- 8:00 - 10:30Physics: new topic plus 30 numericals
- 10:30 - 11:00Formula / exceptions diary revision
- 11:00 - 13:00Chemistry: theory plus chapter PYQs
- 14:00 - 17:00Practice in the exam slot: a timed test or 90 mixed PYQs on OMR
- 17:00 - 18:00Analyse the test and update the error notebook
- 18:30 - 20:30Second Biology block: diagrams, PYQs, weak chapters
- 21:00 - 22:00Light revision of the day's notes, plan tomorrow, sleep by 22:30
Chapter Weightage & Do-or-Die Matrix
Estimates from chapter-wise analyses of NEET 2023-2025 papers by Physics Wallah, Careers360 and Aakash (their 2025 counts differ, so ranges are used); NTA does not publish weightage. Units as per the NEET (UG) 2026 syllabus (NMC).
Where your marks come from (estimate)
Must-do chapters carry roughly 450 of 720 marks. Master the must-do chapters with high accuracy and 600+ is a realistic target before you touch the low-priority list.
NTA does not publish chapter weightage; these are estimates from analyses of recent NEET papers and the count for any chapter can change from year to year.
🔴 Must-Do · High weightage
- Rotational Motion (incl. Centre of Mass)2-3 QsMoment of inertia, rolling and torque are asked every year and are where many students lose marks.
- Gravitation2-3 Qsg variation, orbital and escape energy are formula-based; analyses of 2025 counted several Qs here.
- Thermodynamics2 QsFirst law, process work and Carnot engine questions appear very consistently.
- Oscillations and Waves2-3 QsSHM equations, pendulum and spring periods plus pipes and strings together give a reliable block.
- Electrostatics3-4 QsCoulomb's law, dipoles, potential and capacitors together form one of the biggest Class 12 shares.
- Current Electricity3-4 QsCombinations, Kirchhoff, power and bridges are asked every year; 3-4 Qs in recent papers.
- Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism3-4 QsBiot-Savart, force on charges, galvanometer and magnetic materials are asked every year.
- Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents2-3 QsFaraday/Lenz, reactance, LCR resonance and transformers are formula-driven and frequent.
- Optics (Ray and Wave)4-5 QsLenses, prisms, instruments, YDSE and polarisation together are the largest single unit most years.
- Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation2 QsPhotoelectric effect and de Broglie wavelength are among the easiest, most repeated questions.
- Atoms and Nuclei2-3 QsBohr model, spectral lines, binding energy and half-life make this the best marks-per-hour unit.

🟡 Medium · Scoring
- Physics and Measurement2-3 QsDimensions, errors and instrument readings were 3 Qs in 2025 and take under a minute each.
- Kinematics1-2 QsStraight-line motion graphs and projectiles appear most years and feed later mechanics.

- Work, Energy and Power1-2 QsWork-energy theorem, power and collisions give a steady, scoring question.
- Properties of Solids and Liquids2-3 QsElasticity, fluids, surface tension and thermal expansion each appear; a long chapter, so focus on formula-based parts.
- Kinetic Theory of Gases1-2 QsRMS speed, degrees of freedom and gas law graphs give a short question most years.
- Electromagnetic Waves1-2 QsShort chapter: spectrum order, displacement current and E/B relation give near-free marks.
🟢 Low priority · Lengthy
- Experimental Skills0-1 QVernier/screw gauge, metre bridge and lab setups appear occasionally; revise least counts and main experiments.

Exam Day Hacks & Reasoning
Negative marking maths
With +4 for right and -1 for wrong, a blind guess among 4 options averages 0.25 x 4 - 0.75 x 1 = +0.25 marks. If you can remove one option it rises to about +0.67, and a true 50-50 guess averages +1.5. So guess when you can eliminate at least one option; never guess blind on a question you did not read.
Order of attack: Biology first
Botany and Zoology carry 360 of 720 marks and are the fastest to answer, so most students start there to bank marks. A workable split for 180 minutes: Biology about 70 min, Chemistry about 45 min, Physics about 50 min, and 15 min to finish and check the OMR. Put your strongest subject early if it is not Biology.
One minute per question, on average
The bulletin gives 180 compulsory questions for 180 minutes. Biology questions often take 30-40 seconds, which buys Physics numericals 1.5-2 minutes each. In round 1, skip any Physics question that needs more than 2 minutes and come back to it.
Fill the OMR as you go
This is a pen-and-paper exam. Bubble answers in blocks (for example after every page) rather than all at the end, and keep 10-15 minutes spare. Read the instructions on the test booklet and OMR on the day, and treat every bubble as final.
Check what you can carry
The 2026 bulletin bars items such as instrument or geometry boxes, pencil boxes, handbags and purses, and says candidates go through compulsory frisking at entry. Read the dress code and admit card instructions for your year and reach the centre early.
