1 mark per question and one-third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer, in both CBT 1 and CBT 2, at both levels. CBT 1 only screens candidates for CBT 2; CBT 1 marks do not count in the final merit, which is drawn from CBT 2 (plus CBAT for Station Master and Traffic Assistant). Minimum marks to be considered: UR and EWS 40%, OBC-NCL and SC 30%, ST 25% (a 2% relaxation may be given to PwBD candidates if there is a shortage). Shifts are normalised. The Typing Skill Test is qualifying only and CBAT has no negative marking.

How to Crack: Strategic Blueprint

Pick where you are. Each plan is built around past papers, a formula diary and honest mock analysis.

Same three subjects as the graduate paper but a smaller applicant pool per post: win it on accuracy in Maths and Reasoning plus a solid science base for GA.

  1. 1Start with arithmetic basics (percentage, ratio, LCM-HCF, average, simplification) and do 30 questions a day; NTPC Maths is mostly Class 8-10 level, so speed matters more than new theory.
  2. 2Revise NCERT Class 9-10 Science chapter by chapter; General Science gives about 7-8 GA questions per shift and is fully in your control.
  3. 3Solve Reasoning PYQs topic-wise: coding-decoding, series, analogy and classification first, puzzles and seating later.
  4. 4Most UG posts are typist posts: start typing practice (30 wpm English or 25 wpm Hindi) from the first month, 15 minutes a day.
  5. 5From month three, write one full 100-question, 90-minute mock every week and two a week in the last six weeks.

Topper-grade short notes

Arithmetic shortcut sheet

One page per topic: percentage-fraction table, successive change formula, CI minus SI shortcut, work-rate method, LCM-HCF rules. CBT 1 gives about 54 seconds per question, so speed comes from recall, not derivation.

Science and static GK one-liners

Write every fact as a one-liner in a fixed format ('Common salt: NaCl', 'Article 17: abolition of untouchability'). Keep separate pages for science, history dates, geography, polity articles and railways or government schemes. Revise on a 1-7-30 day cycle.

Current-affairs month sheets

One A4 sheet per month: appointments, awards, sports winners, schemes, summits and reports. NTPC asks about 10 current-affairs questions per shift from the months before the exam, so 12 sheets revised 5 times beat 5 books read once.

Mock error log

After each mock, note per section: attempts, accuracy, time used and the 3 question types that cost most. With −1/3 per wrong answer, a wrong guess wipes out a third of a correct answer, so track whether your guesses actually pay.

Ideal self-study day

  1. 6:00 – 6:45Newspaper and current-affairs month sheet
  2. 6:45 – 8:45Deep work: new Maths topic plus 30 practice questions
  3. 8:45 – 9:15Breakfast and a short walk
  4. 9:15 – 11:00Reasoning: new topic plus 30 NTPC PYQs (timed)
  5. 11:15 – 12:45General Science: one NCERT Class 9-10 chapter and its one-liners
  6. 14:00 – 15:00Static GK subject of the day (History, Geography, Polity, Economy rotation)
  7. 15:00 – 15:30Typing practice (typist posts) or CBAT-type drills (Station Master aspirants)
  8. 16:00 – 17:30Mini mock: 50 mixed questions in 45 minutes
  9. 18:30 – 19:30Error log: re-solve today's wrong questions
  10. 20:30 – 21:30Shortcut sheet and one-liner revision, plan tomorrow, sleep by 22:30

Must-DoMediumLow priority

Must-do topics carry roughly 65 of 100 marks. Master these topics with 85%+ accuracy inside the 90 minutes and a safe CBT 1 score is within reach before you touch the low-priority list.

RRBs do not publish topic weightage and ban sharing of questions; these are estimates from analyses of recent CBT 1 shifts and vary from shift to shift.

🔴 Must-Do · High weightage

  • Number System (divisibility, remainders, unit digit)2-4 QsAsked every shift; quick if divisibility rules and unit-digit cycles are memorised.
  • LCM and HCF2-5 QsHeavily repeated in recent CBT 1 shifts (bells, ratio-based LCM, product = LCM × HCF).
  • Simplification, Decimals and Fractions (BODMAS, surds)2-3 QsPure calculation questions; the fastest marks in the section.
  • Percentage2-3 QsBase for profit, interest and DI; population and expenditure questions are common.
  • Ratio and Proportion (incl. partnership, mixtures)2-3 QsAsked every shift, often combined with percentage or ages.
  • Average2-4 QsRecent shifts asked several average questions (replacement, excluded number, consecutive numbers).
  • Profit, Loss and Discount2-3 QsMarked price, successive discount and false-weight questions are SSC-RRB staples.

🟡 Medium · Scoring

  • Simple and Compound Interest1-2 QsCI minus SI for 2 years and doubling-time questions repeat.
  • Time and Work (incl. pipes and cisterns)1-2 QsWork-rate or LCM method solves almost all of them in under a minute.
  • Time, Speed and Distance (trains, boats)1-2 QsTrain crossing and relative speed are the Railway favourites.
  • Mensuration (2D and 3D)1-2 QsArea, volume and surface area formulas for cylinder, cone, sphere and hemisphere.
  • Elementary Algebra (identities, linear equations)1-2 QsIdentities like (a+b)² and a³+b³ and substituting values.
  • Geometry1 QTriangles, circles and angle properties; usually one direct question.
  • Trigonometry (ratios, identities, heights)1-2 QsValue-of-expression questions using sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 and standard angles.

🟢 Low priority · Lengthy

  • Elementary Statistics (mean, median, mode)1 QMedian of ordered data or mean of a small set; easy when it appears.
  • Age, Calendar and Clock0-1 QOccasional; quick with odd-days and 5.5° per minute rules.
  • Data Interpretation (table or bar chart)0-1 QMore common in CBT 2; in CBT 1 usually a single table-based question.

Mathematics Quick-Revision Cards

Quick on-screen revision cards for the must-do topics. Copy them into your own revision notebook.

Percentage and Fractions

  • Fraction table1/2 = 50%, 1/3 = 33⅓%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/6 = 16⅔%, 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/12 = 8⅓%
  • Successive changeNet % = a + b + ab/100
  • Price up r%, keep spend sameCut consumption by r/(100 + r) × 100%
  • A is r% more than BB is r/(100 + r) × 100% less than A

💡 Convert percentages to fractions before calculating: 37.5% of 640 is 3/8 × 640 = 240.

Profit, Loss and Discount

  • Profit %(SP − CP)/CP × 100
  • Marked priceSP = MP × (1 − d/100)
  • Mark-up m%, discount d%Profit % = m − d − md/100
  • Successive discountsSingle equivalent = d₁ + d₂ − d₁d₂/100
  • False weightGain % = error/(true value − error) × 100

💡 Profit and loss % are always on CP; discount % is always on MP.

Simple and Compound Interest

  • SISI = P × R × T/100
  • Amount (CI)A = P(1 + R/100)ᵀ
  • CI − SI, 2 yearsP × (R/100)²
  • CI − SI, 3 yearsP × (R/100)² × (3 + R/100)
  • Half-yearlyRate R/2, time 2T

💡 At 10% for 2 years, CI is 21% of P and SI is 20%: the gap is 1% of P.

LCM, HCF and Number System

  • Two numbersLCM × HCF = product of the numbers
  • FractionsLCM = LCM of numerators/HCF of denominators; HCF = HCF of numerators/LCM of denominators
  • Ratio a:b with HCF xNumbers ax and bx, LCM = abx (a, b co-prime)
  • Divisibility by 11(sum of odd-place digits) − (sum of even-place digits) = 0 or a multiple of 11
  • Unit digit cycles2: 2,4,8,6; 3: 3,9,7,1; 7: 7,9,3,1; 8: 8,4,2,6

💡 Bells or lights 'together again' questions are always LCM; 'largest size that divides exactly' is always HCF.

Average, Ratio and Ages

  • AverageSum = average × number of items
  • ReplacementNew item = old item + (change in average × n)
  • Consecutive numbersAverage = middle term (or mean of first and last)
  • Mean proportional of a, b√(ab)
  • PartnershipProfit share ∝ capital × time

💡 Work with sums, not averages: write sum before and sum after, then subtract.

Time and Work, Pipes

  • RateIf A takes a days, A's one-day work = 1/a
  • TogetherA and B together = ab/(a + b) days
  • LCM methodTotal work = LCM of days; efficiency = total/days
  • PipesFilling pipe +, leak or outlet −
  • Partial workIf 2/5 of a job takes 12 days, the full job takes 12 × 5/2 = 30 days

💡 Always convert 'part of the work in d days' to full-job days before adding rates.

Speed, Distance and Trains

  • BasicDistance = speed × time; km/h × 5/18 = m/s
  • Train passes a poleTime = length of train/speed
  • Train passes a platformTime = (train + platform length)/speed
  • Relative speedOpposite directions: add; same direction: subtract
  • Average speed (equal distances)2xy/(x + y)
  • BoatsDownstream = u + v, upstream = u − v

💡 Convert units first: most wrong answers in train questions come from mixing km/h and m/s.

Mensuration

  • CircleArea πr², circumference 2πr
  • CylinderVolume πr²h, CSA 2πrh, TSA 2πr(r + h)
  • ConeVolume ⅓πr²h, CSA πrl, l = √(r² + h²)
  • SphereVolume (4/3)πr³, surface area 4πr²
  • HemisphereVolume (2/3)πr³, CSA 2πr², TSA 3πr²
  • Triangle (Heron)√(s(s − a)(s − b)(s − c)), s = (a + b + c)/2

💡 Check whether the question gives diameter or radius: halve it before squaring.

Algebra and Trigonometry

  • Identities(a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²; a² − b² = (a + b)(a − b)
  • Cubesa³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² − ab + b²); if a + b + c = 0 then a³ + b³ + c³ = 3abc
  • Pythagorean identitysin²θ + cos²θ = 1; sec²θ − tan²θ = 1
  • Standard valuessin 30° = ½, sin 45° = 1/√2, sin 60° = √3/2, tan 45° = 1
  • Triplets3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25

💡 If sin θ = 5/13, use the 5-12-13 triplet: cos θ = 12/13 and tan θ = 5/12 without any calculation.

Exam Day Hacks & Reasoning

Negative marking maths for CBT 1

With +1 for right and −1/3 for wrong, a blind guess among 4 options averages exactly 0 (0.25 × 1 − 0.75 × 1/3). After removing one wrong option it rises to about +0.11, and a 50-50 guess averages +0.33. So a blind guess gains nothing on average but adds risk; guess only after you have eliminated at least one option.

One clock for 100 questions

CBT 1 gives 90 minutes for the whole paper (about 54 seconds a question). A workable split: GA 20-25 minutes (you either know it or you don't), Reasoning 25-30 minutes, Maths 30-35 minutes, 5 minutes to revisit marked questions. Check the instructions screen on exam day for how sections are shown.

Start with General Awareness

GA carries 40 of the 100 marks and is the fastest section: answer what you know in one pass, mark the doubtful ones and move on. Banking 25+ GA marks early leaves calm time for Maths, where a single long calculation can otherwise eat 3 minutes.

CBT 1 is a filter

CBT 1 marks only shortlist you for CBT 2 (category-wise, against the vacancies of your RRB); the final merit list uses CBT 2. Aim comfortably above last cycle's normalised cut-off for your RRB and category, and don't take risky guesses just to push an already safe score higher.

Scribe, typing and CBAT rules

PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe get 120 minutes instead of 90. The Typing Skill Test (30 wpm English or 25 wpm Hindi) and CBAT (minimum T-score 42 in each test battery, no negative marking) are qualifying; for Station Master and Traffic Assistant, merit is 70% CBT 2 and 30% CBAT, so a weak CBAT costs rank even after you qualify.
