SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL)

Tier 1 blueprint, topic priority matrix, quick-revision cards and a PYQ practice arena for India's biggest graduate-level government job exam.

Staff Selection Commission (SSC)24 practice MCQs with solutionsMarking: +2 / -0.5 / 0
Stages
Tier 1 (screening) → Tier 2 (merit) → document verification
Tier 1 paper
100 MCQs, 200 marks: Reasoning, General Awareness, Quant, English (25 Qs / 50 marks each)
Tier 1 time
60 minutes, CBT, with a 15-minute sectional timer per section (new in 2026)
Language
English and Hindi, except English Comprehension (English only)
Tier 2 Paper I
Maths 30 + Reasoning 30 + English 45 + GA 25 Qs (3 marks each, −1 per wrong), plus qualifying Computer test (20 Qs) and Data Entry Speed Test
Tier 2 Papers II and III
Statistics (JSO / SI Gr-II) and Finance & Economics (AAO): 100 Qs, 200 marks, 2 hours each

This is the Tier 1 scheme: 2 marks per question and 0.50 deducted for each wrong answer, the same in all four sections. Tier 1 only shortlists for Tier 2; final merit is prepared from Tier 2 marks only. Minimum Tier 1 qualifying marks per the notice: UR 30%, OBC/EWS 25%, all other categories 20%. Multi-shift scores are normalised. In Tier 2 Paper I a wrong answer costs 1 mark; in Papers II and III it costs 0.50.

How to Crack: Strategic Blueprint

Pick where you are. Each plan is built around past papers, a formula diary and honest mock analysis.

Build the four Tier 1 sections together, then add Tier 2 depth once Tier 1 accuracy is steady.

  1. 1Start with Quant basics (percentage, ratio, number system, algebra identities) and do 30 questions a day; Quant and Reasoning are where Tier 1 marks come fastest.
  2. 2Read one newspaper daily for 30 minutes and keep a monthly current-affairs sheet; revise static GK one subject a day from NCERT-level notes.
  3. 3Do 10 English vocabulary items and one RC or cloze passage daily; most English marks come from grammar rules and words you have seen before.
  4. 4From month three, solve SSC CGL PYQs section-wise under a strict 15-minute timer per section, exactly as the 2026 paper is timed.
  5. 5Two months before Tier 1, write 3 full mocks a week; once your mock score is consistently above the previous year's cut-off, start Tier 2 Paper I (more English and GA, Computer basics, typing practice for DEST).

Topper-grade short notes

Shortcut and formula sheet for Quant

One page per topic: identities, standard results (false-weight profit, successive discount, circular-track meeting time) and one solved example. Read it daily; Tier 1 gives about 36 seconds per question, so speed comes from recall, not derivation.

GK one-liners in a fixed format

Write every static fact as a one-liner: 'Project Tiger: 1973', 'Article 226: High Court writs'. Keep separate pages for articles, dances and festivals, awards, firsts, and science facts. Revise with a 1-7-30 day cycle; GK is pure memory.

Vocabulary and error notebook

Every new word, idiom and grammar error from mocks goes in with one example sentence. SSC repeats vocabulary across shifts and years, so your own list of words seen in PYQs is worth more than a big word book.

Mock analysis log

After each mock, note per section: attempts, accuracy, time left, and the 3 question types that cost the most. Track whether your guesses are paying off; with −0.5 per wrong answer, accuracy above about 85% is worth more than extra attempts.

Ideal self-study day

  1. 6:00 – 6:45Newspaper and current-affairs notes
  2. 6:45 – 8:45Deep work: new Quant topic plus 30 practice questions
  3. 8:45 – 9:15Breakfast and a short walk
  4. 9:15 – 11:15Reasoning: new topic plus 25 PYQs in 15 minutes
  5. 11:30 – 13:00English: grammar rule of the day, error spotting and one RC or cloze
  6. 14:00 – 15:30Static GK subject of the day (History, Polity, Geography, Science, Economy rotation)
  7. 15:30 – 16:00Vocabulary notebook: 15 new words, revise 30 old ones
  8. 16:30 – 17:30Sectional test: one section, 25 Qs, 15-minute timer
  9. 18:30 – 19:30Error log: re-solve today's wrong questions; 15 minutes typing practice
  10. 20:30 – 21:30Formula sheet and GK one-liner revision, plan tomorrow, sleep by 22:30

Must-DoMediumLow priority

Must-do topics carry roughly 100 of 200 marks. Master these topics with 85%+ accuracy inside each 15-minute section and a safe Tier 1 score is within reach before you touch the low-priority list.

SSC does not publish topic weightage; these are estimates from analyses of recent Tier 1 shifts and vary from shift to shift.

🔴 Must-Do · High weightage

  • Coding-Decoding2-4 QsLetter-shift, reverse-alphabet and word-code questions appear in almost every shift.
  • Analogy (letter, number, word)2-3 QsNumber-pair and letter-cluster analogies are asked every shift and are quick once patterns are known.
  • Series (number and letter-number)2-3 QsMixed letter-number series and missing-number series are regular, fast marks.
  • Mathematical Operations (sign interchange, BODMAS)2-3 QsInterchanging signs and checking equations is a staple SSC question type.

🟡 Medium · Scoring

  • Classification (odd one out)1-2 QsOdd pair or odd cluster questions appear regularly.
  • Seating Arrangement and Order / Ranking1-3 QsLinear and circular arrangements of 5-8 people; slower, so practise drawing quickly.
  • Blood Relations1-2 QsOften in coded form (A + B means A is the father of B).
  • Syllogism and Statement-Conclusion1-2 QsTwo or three statements with conclusions; Venn method makes them reliable.
  • Venn Diagrams1-2 QsPicking the diagram for three classes or reading numbers from a diagram.
  • Mirror and Water Images1-2 QsFigure-based but rule-based; easy once left-right and top-bottom flips are clear.
  • Paper Folding and Cutting1-2 QsAsked most shifts as a non-verbal question.
  • Embedded / Hidden Figures and Figure Completion1-2 QsRegular non-verbal questions that reward careful visual checking.
  • Counting Figures (triangles, squares)1 QCount triangles or rectangles; a systematic method avoids misses.
  • Figure Series and Pattern Completion1-2 QsRotation and addition patterns in figures.

🟢 Low priority · Lengthy

  • Dice and Cube0-1 QOpposite-face questions from dice positions or unfolded cubes; not every shift.
  • Direction and Distance0-1 QOccasional; quick with a rough sketch.
  • Dictionary Order and Letter Rearrangement0-1 QWord arrangement or letters in alphabetical order; very quick when it appears.
  • Missing Number (figure / matrix)0-2 QsNumber pattern inside a figure or grid.

General Intelligence & Reasoning Quick-Revision Cards

Quick on-screen revision cards for the must-do topics. Copy them into your own revision notebook.

Alphabet Positions

  • ForwardA=1, B=2, ... M=13, N=14, ... Z=26
  • Memory codeE J O T Y = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25
  • Opposite letterOpposite of a letter at position n is at 27 − n (A↔Z, B↔Y, M↔N)
  • Reverse positionReverse position = 27 − forward position

💡 Write EJOTY at the top of your rough sheet as soon as the exam starts; it makes every letter question faster.

Coding-Decoding Patterns

  • ShiftEach letter moves +n or −n (TRAIN → RPYGL is −2)
  • Alternating shift+1, −1, +1 ... or +1, +2, +3 ...
  • ReverseWord written backwards, sometimes with a shift
  • OppositeEach letter replaced by its opposite (27 − n)
  • Number codeSum or product of letter positions

💡 Check the first two letters only; if both fit a rule, test the last letter before marking.

Mathematical Operations

  • OrderBODMAS: Brackets → Of → ÷ → × → + → −
  • Sign swapReplace signs as told first, then solve left to right with BODMAS
  • Interchange checkSwap the two signs/numbers in each option and test the equation

💡 Rewrite the expression with the new signs before calculating; most mistakes come from solving the original signs.

Blood Relations

  • SymbolsMale □ or +, Female ○ or −, couple =, generation drawn one level down
  • Key phrasesFather's or mother's brother = uncle; husband's or wife's father = father-in-law
  • Only son / only daughter'My father's only son' = me (if I am male)

💡 Always draw a 3-generation tree; never solve blood relations in your head.

Syllogism Rules

  • All A are B → Some A are B and Some B are A (both follow)
  • Some A are B ↔ Some B are A
  • No A is B ↔ No B is A; also Some A are not B
  • Two 'some' statements together give no definite conclusion
  • Either-orIf 'Some A are B' and 'No A is B' both do not follow individually but together cover all cases, 'Either I or II follows'

💡 Draw the minimum-overlap Venn diagram; a conclusion follows only if it is true in every possible diagram.

Direction, Mirror and Clock

  • TurnsRight turn = 90° clockwise; left turn = 90° anticlockwise
  • Shortest distance√(x² + y²) from total east-west and north-south movement
  • ShadowsMorning sun in the east → shadow falls west; evening → shadow falls east
  • Mirror imageLeft and right swap; top and bottom stay
  • Water imageTop and bottom swap; left and right stay
  • Mirror clockMirror time = 11:60 − actual time (for times between 1:00 and 11:00)

Dice and Counting

  • Standard dieOpposite faces add to 7 (1-6, 2-5, 3-4)
  • Two positionsIf one face is common, the remaining faces in the same order are opposite
  • Adjacent ruleFaces seen together are never opposite
  • Lines from one vertexIf lines from one vertex split the base into k parts, the figure has k(k + 1)/2 triangles

💡 For counting figures, label every point and list triangles by their vertices; skipping the labels is how answers come out one short.

Exam Day Hacks & Reasoning

Negative marking maths for Tier 1

With +2 for right and −0.5 for wrong, a blind guess among 4 options averages +0.125 marks (0.25 × 2 − 0.75 × 0.5). After removing one wrong option it rises to +0.33, and a 50-50 guess averages +0.75. So guessing after eliminating even one option is mathematically positive, but every wrong answer still lowers your score, so never mark a question you haven't read.

Respect the 15-minute sectional timer

The 2026 notice gives 1 hour with a sectional timer of 15 minutes for each of the four subjects, so time left in one section cannot be carried to another. 25 questions in 15 minutes is about 36 seconds each: do the quick ones first and leave a 2-minute buffer to revisit marked questions before the section closes. Check the instructions screen for the section order on exam day.

Section-wise targets

GK is fastest: answer what you know in 6-8 minutes and use the rest to think through eliminations. In Quant, skip any question that needs more than about a minute in your first pass. In English, read the RC questions before the passage. In Reasoning, do verbal questions first and non-verbal (figures) after.

Tier 1 is a filter, not your final score

Per the notice, final merit is prepared on Tier 2 performance only, while Tier 1 marks decide who is shortlisted, category-wise. Aim comfortably above last year's shortlisting cut-off rather than chasing every question, and don't take risky guesses only to push a high score higher.

Language and scribe rules

Questions are in English and Hindi except the English Comprehension section. Candidates eligible for a scribe get 1 hour 20 minutes in Tier 1 instead of 1 hour. Scores from different shifts are normalised by the Commission's published procedure, so a tough shift is not a reason to panic.
