MBBS abroad after NEET
Study MBBS abroad, the NMC-approved way.
A foreign degree only helps if NMC accepts it when you come back. Check any university against the official rules, then plan with a counsellor. Rules checked on 28 Oct 2026.
NMC FMGL Regulations, 2021
7 rules your foreign MBBS must meet
Miss one, and the degree may not let you practise in India.
- 1Qualify NEET first
Indian citizens and OCIs must qualify NEET to study MBBS or an equivalent course abroad (from 2019-20). The NEET result works as the eligibility certificate.
- 2At least 54 months of course
The medical course itself must run for a minimum of fifty-four months.
- 312-month internship in the same university
The internship abroad must be at least twelve months, in the same foreign institution. No part of the course or internship can be done in India or a third country.
- 4English medium throughout
The whole course must be taught in English.
- 5Licence in that country
You must be registered to practise in that country, at par with its own citizens.
- 6Finish within 10 years
The course must be completed within ten years of joining.
- 7Back in India: exam + internship
Pass the screening test or the National Exit Test (NExT) set by NMC, then do a 12-month supervised internship in India.

Warning signs from agents
- An agent who says NEET is not needed. It is mandatory for every Indian student going abroad for MBBS.
- A course shorter than 54 months, or an internship you are told to do in India or another country.
- Teaching in the local language for some years, or "English medium" only on paper.
- An "offshore campus" of a foreign university inside India. NMC has warned students about such programmes.
- Admission beyond the university's intake, or fees paid to an agent's personal account instead of the university.
- "Guaranteed" admission or FMGE/NExT pass promises. NMC says no institution can guarantee admission outside the prescribed process.
Before you pay, read NMC's latest advisories on nmc.org.in.
